Hot Dogs, 3 Ways

Sunday, June 24th, 2012

Front to Back:  Taco Dog, Hot Dog Topped with Crunchy Slaw with Almond & Apricot Dressing, and Hot Dog Topped with Indian-Spiced Onion Relish

I don’t think regular hot dogs will ever cut it again!, my dad replied.

He pushed back his chair, threw his napkin on his plate, and sighed contentedly.

For my family, it’s not summer without a hot dog party, and now it’s not going to be a hot dog party without going all out.  We’ve been spoiled.  After all, it isn’t every barbeque that we make three different hot dog toppings!  (It’s usually just ketchup, mustard, relish, and onion – “the works.”  Definitely delicious, but these new toppings really take hot dogs to the next level.)  It’s almost like getting to sample three different meals in one.

We had our hot dog party a couple weeks ago and since it wasn’t technically summer yet, I think we’ll probably be having another one before summer ends.  :)

A Lamb Feast

Friday, June 15th, 2012

In many cultures, meat in general and lamb in particular is what you serve to guests…especially guests you really like!  (Since it’s usually the most expensive part of the meal, serving meat demonstrates your hospitality.)  I ate more lamb in the Middle East in just a couple months than I ate in the rest of my life combined.  (Middle Easterners are a generous, hospitable group of people…lamb was on the menu often!  Plus my hubby has a lot of family members, and each one wanted the chance to host us.)

Stateside Mike and I generally don’t eat as much lamb, except during the Eid right after Ramadan.  But really, the biggest reason that we don’t eat is very often is because we haven’t been able to find a good supplier.

Sea Island Coffee {Giveaway}

Wednesday, May 16th, 2012

Are you one of those people who can drink coffee any time of day?  Mike likes to joke that I drink coffee instead of warm milk at night to help me sleep…and while that isn’t exactly true, it is true that coffee doesn’t keep me awake.  I joke that it’s because every time he and I visit the Middle East we chug countless pots of Turkish coffee at all hours of the day.  :) (more…)

Spinach-Mozzarella Grilled Cheese

Friday, April 27th, 2012

With all the amazing looking grilled cheese recipes that have been floating around the internet recently you probably know that April is National Grilled Cheese month.  I had no idea that such a thing existed until the lovely Jo-Lynne (of Musings of a Housewife) asked me if I wanted to create a grilled cheese recipe in honor of the occasion.  (Of course I said yes.  :) ) (more…)

Unwinding with a Little Indulgence

Thursday, March 29th, 2012

Bubble baths?  A good book?  Maybe wine or dark chocolate?  What’s your favorite way to unwind and indulge?

Getting in the kitchen without any prior agenda and just creating something with what I have on hand is my favorite way to decompress and unwind after a hard week or even just a long day.  And of course, chocolate is one of my favorite indulgences. (more…)

Strawberry-Vanilla Smoothie

Thursday, February 16th, 2012

What is one thing you eat every single day?  For me it’s cottage cheese and for Mike it’s yogurt (ironically, I’m also a big yogurt eater but he won’t touch cottage cheese with a 10 foot pole).  That’s ok, I use the fact that he likes yogurt to my advantage.  Namely, to get more fruits and veggies into him whenever I can. Seattle’s Best Coffee {Giveaway}

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

We are kindred souls, Dear Reader, you and I.  We both like good food.  No scratch that, great food.  Cooking it, eating it, even just looking at it.

I’m willing to guess you probably like coffee too…I know I do.  (Or if not, you probably know someone who does?)  It’s one of those things that just make me happy.  Before I even taste it, the smell of it brewing puts a big smile on my face.

Same with you?  Wonderful!  I thought you might say that.  This giveaway is for you. (more…)

Skinny Caramel Hot Cocoa

Monday, January 9th, 2012

This is my new favorite mug…a gift from my very sweet mom!

The other day I was at Walmart with Mike who absolutely hates to shop.  Because of this I can only take him with me when I have a very short list…so this basically means I was running in (literally) for just a couple things and he was in the electronics department patiently waiting for me while I raced through the aisles at warp speed.  I happened to be sprinting through the baking aisle (surprisingly, they have a really extensive selection of Bob’s Red Mill products at Walmart) when I spotted a new (to me) extract:  caramel!  Of course, being the junkie I am for new products, I bought a bottle. Cherry Sauce

Greek Yogurt with Cherry Sauce

This cherry sauce only looks decadent…really!  It has a deep, sweet/tart cherry flavor with a hint of almond and is sweetened with just a bit of honey.  But there’s a secret ingredient…
