Peanut Butter Monte Cristo Club

I remember the first time I saw a Monte Cristo on a menu. I was feeling completely grown-up and oh-so-worldly eating at a fancy café downtown with a friend. Where we had driven our 16-year-old selves.

Anyway, the name of the dish caught my eye and as I read through the description I was curious…and captivated.

Always a fan of the savory/salty/sweet combo, I ordered it.

One bite and my young taste buds were shocked and delighted. I can’t remember what my friend had ordered, but it didn’t matter because she ended up also loving my sandwich so much that she ate half. If you’re a fan of salty with sweet or sweet with savory, you’ll be hard-pressed not to fall hard in love with this beauty.

And if you’ve never had a Monte Cristo, you’re in for a real treat. It’s a fried sandwich, usually made with ham – but I make mine with turkey instead – and cheese. The whole sandwich is dipped in egg batter and then fried; it is typically served dusted with powdered sugar along with fruit preserves (strawberry preserves are my favorite with this).

I decided to put my own spin on a Monte Cristo and take it to the next level. I added chopped roasted peanuts as a garnish, and turkey bacon and peanut butter inside. Oh.my.goodness. Yes.
