Bagels are a rare treat (made even rarer by the fact that in Kuwait it isn’t nearly as easy to find a decent quality bagel as it is in New York). But ironically (because there’s a Cinnabon that’s just a two-minute walk from where we live), cinnamon buns are an even more rare treat. (more…)

For me, this fall has been all about cranberries.

And I’m completely shocked to say that even my seasonal favs like apple and pumpkin have taken the backseat to cranberry this fall. (How did that happen?!)

I think I’m finally giving cranberry the spotlight it deserves. (And shame on me for not doing it sooner! But I did share some pretty fabulous Cranberry-Flax Cookies and some lovely Dark Chocolate-Coated Cranberry Cake Bites.)

I can’t imagine a holiday dinner without turkey and all the trimmings. Not just for Thanksgiving; we don’t eat pork (so ham is out of the question), and Christmas calls for a big turkey dinner as well. We don’t mind.

Actually, we love it so much, we usually make one other full turkey dinner in late winter/early spring just for the heck of it. Creatures of habit, we are.

Similarly, Thanksgiving brunch always means a pumpkin treat will be on the menu. That is just how it goes, and it’s something everyone looks forward to. (more…)

Have I ever told you about my mom’s apple pie?

It’s killer.

She always makes it deep-dish style (like Chicago pizza). Sometimes she’ll make it with a double crust and sometimes she’ll make it with what she calls a “French crumble topping”, and her thick apple layer is perfectly spiced and sweetened. It is hands-down the best apple pie. In the world. (Tall claim, but I’m sticking to it…but I won’t argue if you tell me the same about your mom’s pie.) (more…)

Are you a math person?

I’m a weird sort of non-math math person. I’m the type of person who can figure out completely convoluted math word problems quickly. But then, I’m sad to say, my basic math skills – like multiplication and division – are pretty lacking. Sigh. I have absolutely nothing to say for myself.

Mike is always confounded as to how my mind works. He’s the opposite of me, so I guess we complete each other, lol. (more…)

Cauliflower Hash + A Beautiful Experience at a Syrian Restaurant in Kuwait

Syrian or Lebanese?, Mike asked me late one evening, wondering what I was in the mood for.

Syrian! A glimmer in my eyes, I replied instantly, already excited at the prospect.

(Side Note: Something you might not know about Mike is that he was born here in Kuwait and left the country as a young child with his family to live in Syria – his mother’s homeland – after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait in the early 1990s. He still has several childhood friends here.)

That night, Mike and I were going out to dinner with one of his friends that he had reconnected with since we moved here. Life is funny like that…reconnections from our past are unexpectedly interwoven with new experiences.

As we drove to the restaurant through the dusty, crowded streets of Kuwait I had no idea the desert oasis that awaited us. (more…)
