Strawberry-Filled Vanilla Cake with {Stabilized} Whipped Cream Frosting

In my home, desserts are just as seasonal as any other food.

It would be strange to have a hearty beef stew for dinner in the middle of summer, and it would be all but unheard of (except for a birthday celebration) to have a rich, heavy chocolate cheesecake for dessert. Summer calls for fresher, lighter fare all around…dessert included. (more…)

A while ago a friend asked me for a honey cake recipe for Rosh Hashanah.

But not just any old honey cake recipe. She said she’d had enough mediocre and even unpleasant honey cakes to last a lifetime. Beautiful buttery-golden pound cake, faintly flavored with vanilla and almond, is the perfect summer dessert.

At Christmas I’m no better. I’ve been known to bribe my sister with Tim Hortons coffee (her favorite) and homemade muffins for information on gifts. I can’t help it, lol…the anticipation is too much for me! (more…)

Parsnip Cake with Maple Buttercream

Like most people out there, I’m a dessert lover, so I was thrilled to recently receive a copy of Michel Richard’s Sweet Magic to review. The name of this book immediately drew me in; after reading it, I realized just how appropriately named it is. What else but magic could cause a few simple ingredients to come together so harmoniously? (more…)
