We all know not to judge a book by its cover.

I think that same adage should wholeheartedly be applied to food. (more…)

Pecan Linzer Cookies with Cherry Filling

Everyone used to have to give a card to everyone – boy or girl – no matter if we liked them or not.

(Which of course was good so that no one felt left out…but it left serious problems when it came to choosing the perfect card. It was a fine line between finding a pretty, flowery card for the girls without having it be too sappy and endearing for the boys. Ahhh, to have the problems of a fifth-grade girl again, lol.) Yup, it’s true, he doesn’t like to eat, toddler-style. As in, I guess I’ll eat if I have to, but only when I really feel like it, and good luck getting me to try anything new.

Sigh. The challenges I have to face, lol. (more…)

Things are about to get cookie crazy around here.

Ok, not really, but they should. And in a perfect world (read: where calories don’t at all for the entire months of November and December), cookie crazy would be my life right now. (more…)

Different cultures have different rites of passage.

Like getting a driver’s license and graduating high school.

Or tribal, like land diving, tooth sharpening, and facial tattooing. (more…)

In college I knew someone who thought he was Jay Gatsby’s character from The Great Gatsby.

He acted aloof and mysterious, and no joke, made me call him “J”. Not even “Jay” like in the book; just “J” because he said he felt like it suited him better.

Although we grew up only living 10 minutes apart, we were in different school districts and never met until college. He liked to pretend that he was exotic and foreign, and although he was just six months older than me, so much more worldly, learned, and well-traveled. (He actually was more well-traveled than I was at the time, so I’ll give him that.) (more…)

Where you live, does it snow for Christmas? It used to snow here religiously every year. (Actually, I remember being a kid and trick-or-treating in the snow on Halloween some years!) Alas, we haven’t been guaranteed a white Christmas for the past four years or so.

Which is a crying shame, really…there’s just something about a blanket of white that makes Christmas feel so special. (more…)
