How many of us have childhood memories of garlic bread pizza? I sure do. It was all the rage when I was growing up, but it’s literally been over a decade since I’ve had it.

Sometimes I feel like I have so many random tidbits to tell you at once, there’s no way I could fit everything into one cohesive post.

So I decided to start something new.

Each Monday I’ll be featuring a Mosaic Mondays post where I share a few current happenings, favorite finds, and exciting announcements. It’ll be a post where we can just dish without having to make a dish, although I will always still include food (who am I kidding…these posts will mostly likely be centered around food). I’m excited about this, especially since the idea has been a while coming! Crunchy Asian Slaw

There is an absolutely killer Asian slaw recipe floating around the internet; in fact, I’d even guess that many of you have had it.

I’ll admit that I’ve had it, and more than once. It somehow makes an appearance at almost every summer party I attend (and I promise I’m not the one who brings it, lol).

It has tasty things like sesame seeds, almonds, scallions, and soy sauce. After requesting the recipe from a friend, I discovered that it also has pretty generous amounts of butter, oil, sugar, and even ramen noodle seasoning mix. That last ingredient is not only high in sodium, but also has MSG. I was less than thrilled when I realized that the slaw I loved so much didn’t love me back at all.

So yeah, I was done with that.

But I still love a good slaw with Asian flavors. (more…)

When I was a kid I hated two things about my birthday: 1) it wasn’t during the summer (I was so jealous of kids who got to have beach or pool birthday parties!), and 2) because my birthday is in September and I started school when I was four instead of five, I was the youngest in the class. (And for some reason, being the youngest was just no fun…everyone thought it was super cool to be the oldest. Oh how things change as an adult, lol.)

With an end-of-June birthday, my dad is luckier on both counts. (more…)

Lamb Meatballs in a Spicy Curry

My mom has always been quite the sneaky cook.

She always wanted us to expand our culinary horizons and give new things a try. We weren’t picky kids, but when the new things she wanted us to try were hare, bear, and deer, we protested something fierce. (We had some serious hunters in the family…and the bear was a result of my uncle about to be attacked in the woods by a bear when he was deer hunting. He literally had one shot!)

So when it came to uncommon meats, my mom tried to fool us every time. It got to the point when she made something like spaghetti with meat sauce we asked to see the package that the meat came in to make sure it wasn’t one of our favorite woodland creatures. (Not that bear was one of our favorites, but the thought of eating bear was just plain off-putting.) (more…)

Sweet Potato Hash with Paprika Yogurt Sauce

It’s funny how one word can conjure up 100 different memories. The word “hash” for me triggers childhood memories of a mess of potato, onion, garlic, and meat. The smell of paprika lingering in the air, the sight of fried eggs with bright yellow yolks adorning the top of what would otherwise be a very bland-colored hash. The sounds of birds chirping outside and the rustle of leaves as the wind blew by.

We’d be out in the country because for some strange reason, hash was only something we ate when camping, never gracing our kitchen or finding its way to our dining table at home. (more…)
