This sweet and creamy Pina Colada Smoothie recipe is a delicious, healthy mocktail style smoothie, and it’s easy to make into a cocktail with a little rum!
Who doesn’t love a good Piña Colada, right? It’s a sweet fruity taste of the tropics that will transport you to a virtual paradise.
This drink was invented in San Juan, Puerto Rico in the 1950’s. And the first sip of a Pina Colada takes you to its birthplace! It conjures up images of palm trees, white sand beaches, pristine ocean water, and a blue sky studded with puffy white clouds.
But it gets even better because this is a healthy paleo version of the classic! Blended frozen banana and pineapple with coconut milk and a touch of honey and lime come together for a drink that’s as refreshing as it is delicious.
Paleo Pina Colada Smoothie Recipe
I’m not even kidding when I say that last summer I don’t think I touched a single ice cream cone because of this smoothie. And that’s not to say that I didn’t crave ice cream!
Any time an ice cream craving would hit, I’d whip up this Pina Colada Smoothie. Disaster averted.
Topped with a cherry, my niece and I had many a fun mocktail hour with this smoothie. (Kids go crazy for it!)
Sometimes I’ll even add a cup or two of spinach to make it a green smoothie (which is what I did here), and nope, you can’t taste the spinach.
Pro Tip: Freeze this smoothie into popsicle molds because it makes super creamy popsicles!
Pina Colada Recipe – What Goes in a Pina Colada?
Traditionally, this cocktail contains pineapple juice and cream of coconut or coconut milk. It’s garnished with a maraschino cherry and/or a fresh pineapple wedge.
What Alcohol is in a Pina Colada?
Light rum, also called white rum.
Frozen Treat Week
In keeping with the other two healthy treats I’ve shared for Frozen Treat Week (3-Minute Easy Cherry-Chocolate Sorbet and Almost-Instant Healthy Mint Chocolate Chip Soft Serve), today’s treat is equally healthy. And every bit as delicious.
I’ve had so much fun sharing a few of my favorite frozen treats with you this week. I want to give a HUGE thank-you to Katie and Brandy for organizing this event. It is a lot of work to put an event like this together!

Pina Colada Smoothie
Ingredients
- ¾ cup canned unsweetened light coconut milk
- ¾ cup cubed pineapple frozen
- ½ medium banana peeled, chopped into 2 pieces, and frozen
- ½ tablespoon honey
- 1 teaspoon fresh lime juice
- 1 pinch sea salt
- 1 fresh cherry for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- Add all ingredients into a blender and process until smooth.
- Transfer to a serving glass and top with the cherry if desired; serve.
Faith's Tips
- This recipe is from the e-book BLEND: Artisanal Smoothies for Food Lovers, Summer Volume 1 that I released with Alyssa of Everyday Maven. You can read more about this e-book here.
- For the vegan version, omit the honey or use maple syrup instead.
- To get in some vegetables, blend in a handful of fresh baby spinach. Yes, the smoothie will turn green, but no, you can't taste the spinach!
- Freeze this smoothie in popsicle molds for a delicious healthy frozen treat!
