This is my new favorite mug…a gift from my very sweet mom! The other day I was at Walmart with Mike who absolutely hates to shop. Because of this I can only take him with me when I have a very short list…so this basically means I was running in (literally) for just a couple things and he was in the electronics department patiently waiting for me while I raced through the aisles at warp speed. I happened to be sprinting through the baking aisle (surprisingly, they have a really extensive selection of Bob’s Red Mill products at Walmart) when I spotted a new (to […]...
Homemade Concord Grape Juice
Homemade Concord Grape Juice is a delicious, antioxidant-rich beverage. I feel like a mom. At least in the sense that I haven’t had a hot meal (since I’m too busy photographing them) in about two and a half years. (And yes, of course I understand that a mom’s life is so, so much more than that…you moms are incredible!) Like any mom, I do it happily though, since it benefits my blog (which is like my child in a lot of ways). I don’t even mind taking pictures when I’m eating out or walking around town. But…well, sometimes I need a break from the camera....
Cherry Cordials
Have you ever heard of squash? Not the vegetable, but the concentrated syrup made from fruit, sugar, and water. Squash (also called cordial) can be made from just about any fruit you like…I happen to love cherries and had half a bag in my freezer leftover from when I made this chicken dish. It was an unseasonably hot pre-summer day and I couldn’t imagine a better way to cool off than with this refreshing drink....
Oat Tea
Old man winter has made himself at home. And while I really don’t mind his arrival, it’s the goodies he tends to bring with him, like colds, flues, and less than 10 hours of sunlight each day that I don’t enjoy. Being asthmatic, I’m especially prone to lung infection, particularly pneumonia. (I’ve gotten it every year since I’ve moved from Florida back to New York…hmm, perhaps a sign that I need to move back to Florida?) Anyway, I’ve been feeling a little under the weather and I’m of the mindset that prevention is the best cure, which is why as of late I’ve been getting […]...
Rosemary-Infused Ginger Ale
When it comes to my beverage of choice I’m usually a water drinker, but when I eat out one of the few exceptions I make is when I see ginger ale on a menu. Most people don’t understand my obsession (which I admit is a little weird), and actually, my ordering ginger ale usually invites questions like do you have a stomachache, or are you 90? (Let’s hope the answer to at least the second question is fairly obvious, lol!) It’s totally worth the ridicule though; for me ginger ale’s crisp refreshing flavor is second to none, which is why I’ve been dying to make a homemade […]...
Hot Chocolate — Christmas Brunch
Some days are better than others, especially this time of year. Some days you wake up and spring out of bed with a smile on your face, just knowing that it will be a good day. But then you get into your car and spend hours battling the barrage of angry shoppers, not only in stores but also on the roads and in parking lots. After following decorum and waiting patiently for a parking spot and then having your space stolen not once, not twice, but three times and then waiting in four different lines for over an hour each only to find out that two of the items […]...
How to Make Coconut Milk {Vegan, Lactose-Free}
With the high prevalence of people choosing vegan foods and people living with food allergies, dairy-free milk substitutes are becoming increasingly popular. I remember my little brother being lactose intolerant when he was young and his doctor recommending he drink goat’s milk, which still contains lactose but for some reason is easier to digest than cow’s milk. My sister and I teased him relentlessly (all in good fun…what are loving big sisters for?), calling him a little “kid” (bad pun, I know). Anyway, nowadays even in regular grocery stores you can usually find several different kinds of dairy-free milk, including rice, almond, soy, and coconut […]...
Cold-Brewed Iced Tea
I have been drinking cold-brewed iced tea all summer and I cannot believe I only just now thought to share it with all of you. You probably already have a favorite recipe for iced tea, but if you haven’t tried cold brewing it yet I highly recommend it. It’s a wink and a nod to Sun Tea, which was my favorite summertime drink as a child (but without the risk of food poisoning that Sun Tea has), and I think it’s the perfect way to enjoy the last few days of summer. With any luck warm weather will carry into autumn, but if not there’s […]...
Eggnog
To me, nothing is more festive than eggnog. Snow falling, carols playing, and a glass of chilled eggnog is all it takes to put me in a festive holiday mood. I know you can buy eggnog at the store without all the work of making it yourself…but I promise that the store-bought stuff can’t hold a candle to the flavor of homemade eggnog! If you want to share, I’d love you hear some of your favorite holiday foods or drinks! If you like the flavor of eggnog, but find it too rich to drink on its own, here are a few other uses for it: […]...
Cardamom-Spiced Mocha
Cardamom in coffee might sound strange, but cardamom is typically added to Turkish and/or Arabic coffee. Cardamom is related to ginger, and it has a eucalyptus-like aroma and a warm flavor similar to cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger, but with lemon-citrusy undertones. Not only does it add a very complex flavor to coffee, but according to The Herb & Spice Companion, there is some evidence suggesting that cardamom reduces the effects of caffeine in coffee. I really like the use of cardamom in mocha because all of its flavor complexities pair well with the various flavor notes in the cocoa powder. And it’s even better […]...
