As I’ve mentioned before, I love it when Mike goes grocery shopping with me. Last time we were at Wegmans I spotted this soda and could barely contain myself. Normally I’m not much of a soda drinker, but I’m a huge sucker for seasonal products. Even so, I wasn’t going to buy it, but Mike insisted…isn’t he a sweetie? ;)
Pretty and festive with crystallized ginger.
It comes in beer bottles, but this drink is actually a soda and is alcohol-free. It’s quite fizzy at first, but it loses its fizz pretty quickly compared with other sodas. It smells cinnamon-y (kind-of in a Big Red gum sort of way) and other spices. The best way I can describe the taste is like a spiced cream soda, since it has a similar mouthfeel to cream soda and similar flavor notes, but with added notes of warm spices! I enjoyed it, and for a non-soda drinker like me who enjoys an occasional soda (especially a seasonally-flavored one ;) ), it was perfect.
I was happy to learn that Maine Root takes a great deal of pride in their products, which are Fair Trade Certified and organically sweetened. From their website, here’s a little bit about their products that I found interesting: “Our sodas were founded on the idea of providing the best tasting and environmentally responsible product we could make. While working as a waiter at the all natural and organic Flatbread Pizza Co., in Portland Maine, Maine Root Founder Matthew Seiler was inspired to make a change. After serving so many bad Root Beers, he set out to create an alternative. Using the restaurant as the testing ground, Maine Root was created. At first it was served exclusively at the restaurant, then throughout Portland, then throughout Maine. Now Maine Root is enjoyed NATIONWIDE! Last year, we sold more bottles of Maine Root than Coke at the Flatbread, Co.!”
I’ll definitely toast to a fun, seasonal beverage made by a fantastic company!
