If you know me in real life, you probably know I don’t talk about politics until I really know someone. But injustice isn’t politics, it’s about treating a human like a human. Always. . The first time I witnessed racism firsthand I was in my 20s. It was winter and my ex-husband and I lived in Buffalo. The plan was for us to fly down to Orlando for a family vacation to meet the rest of my family who were driving down. Due to a delayed flight because of a snowstorm in Buffalo, we missed our connecting flight in Atlanta and ended up driving from Atlanta to Orlando. . We randomly stopped somewhere in Georgia for gas and my ex went in to pay. After several minutes I went inside to see what was taking so long. My ex, who is Middle Eastern, was standing at the counter with the money in his hand holding it up to the cashier to pay. He wasn’t saying anything, and he had a look on his face that shattered my heart: humiliation. . I was completely confused. As I was walking to the counter, I heard the woman behind the counter ask where he was heading and why, while the only other patron stood nearby listening and laughing. I asked the woman if there was a problem. She snickered, literally looked at my ex-husband sideways, and said he didn’t look like he was from around here. . I was so angry I was shaking. As politely as I could, I asked her how that was relevant to him paying for gas. She smirked. I asked my ex to put the money on the counter. He did, and I took his hand, and we left. I turned around before she could see the tears streaming down my face because I didn’t want her to know she had the power to do that to another person. . That the fact that someone’s skin is brown or they speak with an accent or “they don’t look like they’re from around here” would be a reason to interrogate and humiliate them blew my mind. People experience this type of hate way too frequently. And as we all know, so much worse than this happens. 💔😭 . When it comes to standing up for the rights of other humans, there is no middle ground. Injustice has gone on for way too long and we need to be the change. #blacklivesmatter

Currently craving the prettiest #gelato from Paris. 🌹 Like most things in France, even the gelato is art. They shape it into roses as they scoop it and it’s almost too pretty to eat. Our favorite place to get it was at a gelateria in Quartier de l'Odéon in the 6th arrondissement across from a restaurant called Maison Sauvage. The aerial view of the #nationalmall in the first slide is why I love flying into DCA. The view in the second slide is from #arlingtonnationalcemetary, and as heart-wrenching as it is to see, I think it's so important. It's a sea of graves that continues in every direction for just about as far as the eye can see for those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. ❤️🇺🇸💙 If you've never been to Arlington National Cemetary I recommend going there to honor them. But be prepared for one of the most humbling experiences of your life...and bring tissues. (Photos were from my last trip to #dc in fall 2018.) #memorialday

I had completely forgotten about this oldie but goodie on my blog until a friend asked me for the recipe yesterday! It features fresh peaches 🍑 and burrata cheese, and there's also pistachio and basil 🌿 involved. I use beef bacon 🥓 for smoky crunch, but you can use whatever type of bacon you like or skip it to keep this vegetarian. “The trouble is, you think you have time.” - Jack Kornfield When quarantine started, I had a list of things I wanted to tackle with my spare time. I've been able to cross a few of them off my list 📝 but not as many as I'd have liked. For starters, one of my goals is to become fluent in French by this fall (I was fluent in college, so this should be doable), but I've been seriously neglecting it. I'm currently downloading 2 French language apps and have recruited a friend who's a native speaker to practice with regularly. I'm determined to make it happen lol. ☺️ And how gorgeous is this place? ☀️💙🌴 It's peaceful and perfect for getting in a workout and some beautiful views especially early morning before it gets too hot outside. @laraclevenger #floridalife
