Sweet Pepper Chickpea Salad with Mint and Honey-Sumac Vinaigrette

September 11, 2017 by Faith 1 Comment

Sweet Pepper Chickpea Salad with Mint and Honey-Sumac Vinaigrette features the tangy bright citrus-like flavor of sumac tempered with honey. Three kinds of bell peppers add color and crunch, and two kinds of fresh herbs make it something truly special.

The thing is, I can happily eat salad like this for lunch any day of the year. It makes no difference to me that summer is (unofficially) over. Setting aside for a minute the fact that it’s always summer in Florida (except for about two weeks in January!), I eat hearty salads like this in the winter as well (or at least I did when I lived in places that had winter, lol).…

Sumac-Spiced Baked Eggs with Kale {Paleo}

December 19, 2016 by Faith 1 Comment

Paleo Sumac-Spiced Baked Eggs with Kale are just different enough to be more interesting than your average egg dish, but not so off-the-wall that they’re not a crowd-pleaser. Sumac adds a pleasantly tangy flavor that nicely compliments the earthy kale. Last Friday evening, Mike and I photographed and catered a private event. It ended up being a pretty random thing for us; a friend of a friend needed a caterer and I was recommended to cook, and as a total bonus Mike was available for photography. What was the event? A sweetheart of a guy was proposing to his girlfriend (and she said yes!) and […]...

Tangy Whipped Yogurt with Honey-Muddled Red Raspberries and Sumac

April 15, 2016 by Faith 14 Comments

Tangy Whipped Yogurt with Honey-Muddled Red Raspberries and Sumac is a refreshingly sweet and tangy way to dress up yogurt for breakfast or a light dessert. I’m often surprised at how delicious the simplest foods are. Fresh strawberries drizzled with dark chocolate; just-baked bread spread with butter; juicy ripe pear slices with creamy blue cheese and a touch of honey; onions and garlic sautéed in olive oil and seasoned with salt and pepper; and let’s not forget a humble childhood favorite, peanut butter and jelly. These are the pairings – too simple to even be considered recipes – that are staples in my kitchen but […]...

Sautéed Leeks with Sweet Green Peas, Sumac, and Honey {Giveaway}

April 4, 2016 by Faith 126 Comments

Sautéed Leeks with Sweet Green Peas, Sumac, and Honey is a subtly sweet and slightly tangy spring side dish. Every trip I’ve made to the grocery store since mid-March I’ve asked the patient produce employees at Wegmans when they’ll have fiddlehead ferns in. And every week it’s the same response: It should be soon now!...

Tangy Arugala Salad with Sumac (Salatat Jarjeer)

July 10, 2015 by Faith 7 Comments

Rocket lettuce is the star of this Tangy Arugala Salad with Sumac (Salatet Jarjeer) that I learned how to make in Kuwait! I’m not a long-time fan of peppery “rocket” lettuce. In fact, it’s only within the past couple years that I started to enjoy arugala. In Kuwait arugala is widespread, which isn’t surprising because arugala thrives in sandy soil. When Mike and I lived there, he had a habit of ordering from his favorite Persian restaurant (which was literally a two-minute walk from where we lived) about once a week. They always included a few bags full of arugula with our kebabs, and since […]...
