How many of you will admit to sneaking some of your kid’s Halloween candy when no one is looking?
I don’t have kids (yet!), but yeah, I’d be guilty as charged.
It’s the stuff we won’t buy for ourselves, but if it’s just hanging around, it’s fair game. If you didn’t buy it for yourself, the calories don’t count, right? ;)
I like to have healthier treats that will still satisfy a sweet tooth at the ready.
Back home, one of the holiday markets I go to has a stand selling gorgeous gourmet chocolate and caramel-coated apples. Some are coated in nuts, crushed candy, cookie pieces, etc. Throwing all caution to the wind and with complete disregard for the old saying an apple a day keeps a doctor away, they have figured out how to take something healthy and make it into something that should be saved for special occasions only. But oh my goodness, those apples are hard to resist. Of course I have to serve them cut into wedges because more than a wedge or two of those apples will send you right into a sugar coma.
Although those insanely decadent apples were the inspiration for my Healthy Candy Apple Wedges, these little beauties can be enjoyed anytime. Apple + super dark, antioxidant-rich chocolate + toasted walnuts = perfect sweet treat. For anytime.
Now quick, go make these because you know once tomorrow night rolls around your willpower will be waning!
P.S. These would be super fun to make with the kiddos too! You could melt a couple different kinds of chocolate so they have choices, and also let them use other healthy toppings (like other nuts, seeds, coconut flakes, chia seeds, mini chocolate chips, etc.). Get them excited about healthy treats…and maybe they won’t completely gorge on Halloween candy! :)
