This is the best easy frozen margarita recipe! This sweet and fruity frozen berry margarita recipe whips up easily for a vibrant, refreshing cocktail. It’s perfect for an adult Cinco de Mayo fiesta, Taco Tuesday night, or any celebration!
A classic margarita is a strong cocktail made traditionally of tequila, orange liqueur, and fresh lime juice. It’s frequently served in a salt-rimmed glass. Additionally, it can be shaken with ice, served over ice, or blended with ice for a slushy-like frozen cocktail.
And there are a lot of variations! A popular one is a strawberry margarita, which has strawberries blended in. Similarly, this frozen berry margarita recipe blends frozen berries into the mix. The result is a sweet and fruity take on the classic.
This is a fun cocktail to make for Cinco de Mayo or anytime you’re putting together a fiesta-style menu. And Taco Tuesdays or girls’ night in are a lot more fun with a pitcher of margaritas!

Ingredients and Substitutions
Ingredients Explained
In this section I explain the ingredients and give substitution ideas where applicable. For the full recipe (including the ingredient amounts), see the recipe card below.
Salt Rim Ingredients for Margarita Glasses
- Sea salt – Salted rims not only look elegant, but the salty flavor helps round out the bitterness in the liquor so the fruity flavor of the drink comes through.
- Lime wedge – We rub the rib of each glass with a lime before dipping it in salt. The sticky lime juice adds a tart flavor, and is what makes the salt stick.
Frozen Berry Margaritas Ingredients
- Simple Syrup – This is the sweetener in this cocktail. In its most basic form, simple syrup is just a mixture of water and sugar. I give instructions on how to make it in the notes of the recipe card below, or you can use store-bought simple syrup. Additionally, agave nectar is a good substitute.
- Blanco tequila – This is also sometimes referred to as silver or white tequila.
- Orange liqueur – Such as Cointreau.
- Fresh lime juice – Lime juice is a traditional ingredient in classic margaritas. Its bright, citrusy, tangy flavor helps create a balanced profile.
- Frozen mixed berries – Such as strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries, or any frozen berries you like.
Instructions
Step 1: Salt the Rims of the Glasses
- Rub the cut side of a fresh lime wedge along the rim of each of 4 glasses.
- And then, immediately after rubbing each glass with lime, dip them in salt.
Step 2: Blend the Frozen Margaritas
- Add all ingredients to a blender.
- Blend until smooth and serve in salt-rimmed margarita glasses.
Tips
- How to Make Simple Syrup: To make about 3/4 cup of simple syrup, add 1/2 cup sugar and 1/2 cup water to a small saucepan over medium heat. Bring to a boil, and then remove from the heat and cool to room temperature. Or you can buy pre-made simple syrup if you prefer.
- Simple Syrup Substitute: If desired, use agave nectar instead of simple syrup.
- Orange Liqueur Substitute: If you don’t have orange liqueur, you can omit it from this recipe. However, if desired add 1/2 cup orange juice or 1/4 teaspoon orange extract instead.
Frozen Berry Margarita FAQs
What’s in a Classic Margarita?
A classic margarita only has three ingredients: tequila, orange liqueur (such as Cointreau), and lime juice. It’s commonly served in a glass with a salted rim.
What is Margarita Mix?
Margarita mix is typically a non-alcoholic syrup. It usually contains sugar, water, and lime juice (as well as preservatives if you buy the mix instead of making it). It’s meant to be mixed with tequila to make margaritas!
How Can I Make Strawberry Margaritas?
It’s easy to turn this recipe into strawberry margaritas!
To make strawberry margaritas, omit the frozen mixed berries. Instead, use 4 cups of either fresh or frozen strawberries. However, if you use fresh strawberries, add 1 cup of ice. And then blend it up!

I’m normally not big on alcoholic beverages but this looks absolutely delicious! Just out of curiosity: is there a nonalcoholic substitute for the tequila?
Yes! :) You can use a fruit juice like cranberry or white grape juice. Or you can use unsweetened iced tea; I’ve made it with unsweetened green tea and it’s delicious!
