There are so many reasons to have a variety of delicious, easy appetizer recipes up your sleeve! The holidays (Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve are always appetizer meals in my house), game days (is it even the Super Bowl if there aren’t snacks?!), birthday parties, and movie nights, to name just a few occasions.

If you like PF Chang’s green bean fries and TGI Friday’s green bean fries, I think you’ll love this homemade version. Try this recipe and it’s sure to become a new favorite at your house!

These flavorful, crispy air fryer green beans with parmesan hit all the right notes. We use a couple easy methods to make sure they come out crunchy every single time. And using the air fryer means these have a lot less oil than if they were fried (we use just 1/2 tablespoon of oil for the whole recipe).

This is a fun way to get in your veggies, and it’s a great way to convince picky eaters to try green beans. Also, they whip up in just 30 minutes!

And bonus, if you need a good keto or low carb appetizer, this green bean appetizer is it. You can make the keto version of this recipe with just two easy changes (see the Notes in the recipe card below for instructions).

Why not get in some crunch along with your veggies, right?!

The Best Air Fryer Green Bean Fries Recipe

Ingredients

air fryer green bean fries ingredients
  • Panko breadcrumbs – this type of breadcrumbs is larger than regular breadcrumbs, and gets really crispy in the air fryer
  • Parmesan cheese – adds depth of flavor; use pre-grated store-bought parmesan cheese here
  • Garlic powder and paprika – for savory flavor
  • Salt and black pepper – to season the beans
  • Green beans – use fresh beans here (not frozen or canned)
  • All-purpose flour – to coat the green beans and help the egg stick to them
  • Eggs – this helps the breadcrumbs stick
  • Extra-virgin olive oil – to brush the air fryer basket

How to Make Healthy Air Fryer Green Bean Fries

how to breadcrumb green beans for fries
  1. Add the panko, parmesan, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and black pepper to a shallow bowl. Stir to combine.
  2. Rinse the green beans and pat them dry. Add them to a gallon-size zip-top plastic bag along with the flour. Seal the bag and shake to coat the beans.
  3. Crack the eggs into a shallow bowl and whisk.
  4. To coat the green beans in the breadcrumb mixture, shake off the excess flour, dip it in egg and let the excess drip off, and then coat in the panko mixture. Repeat until all the green beans are coated.
how to cook green bean fries in air fryer
  1. Preheat an air fryer to 390F. Once hot, lightly brush the bottom of the air fryer basket with oil. Arrange the coated green beans in the basket so they aren’t touching each other.
  2. Air fry until golden, about 6 to 7 minutes (no need to flip them). Repeat until all the green bean fries are cooked (I had to do 3 batches in my air fryer for this amount of green beans), brushing the bottom of the air fryer basket before each batch.

How to Store and Reheat Air Fryer Green Bean Fries

Storage: Store leftovers covered in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Reheating: You can reheat these in a 350F oven for 5 minutes or in a 350F air fryer for 3 minutes.

How to Serve Air Fryer Green Bean Fries

These crispy, crunchy, perfectly seasoned fries are great as a side dish with just about anything! They go well everything from cast iron burgers, to garlic butter salmon, to marinated chicken.

Green bean fries are also a great choice to serve as part of an appetizer spread. Serve them up with a spread of marinated mozzarella balls (that take just 10 minutes to make!), grilled peppers (that are also easy to make in the oven), and turkey sliders.

What Dipping Sauce to Serve with Green Bean Fries

And don’t forget to serve these along with a sauce for dipping! These pair well with just about any sauce you like, so the sky is the limit here.

Here are a few of my favorite sauces to serve with green bean fries:

How to Make Keto Air Fryer Green Bean Fries

This recipe is easy to make low carb and keto with two simple changes! For keto air fryer green beans:

  1. Use 2 tablespoons coconut flour instead of the all-purpose flour, and
  2. Substitute 1 cup almond flour instead of the panko.

And this keto version is also gluten free!

Tips for Making This Air Fryer Green Bean Fries Recipe

  • Don’t use frozen green beans or canned green beans here. Both of those options are much mushier than fresh green beans. For the best crispy air fryer green beans, use fresh green beans!
  • Make sure you use panko breadcrumbs. If you’re looking for the biggest crunch factor, panko breadcrumbs will give it to you. Panko breadcrumbs are much larger than regular breadcrumbs, and yield super crispy green bean fries. With that being said, regular breadcrumbs will still work in a pinch, but your fries won’t be as crunchy.
  • For the parmesan cheese, there’s no need to grate it fresh for this recipe, just use the stuff in the plastic canister. Its texture is similar to breadcrumbs (but softer) and coats the green beans really well.

Air Fryer Green Bean Fries FAQs

Why is My Food Not Crispy in the Air Fryer?

There are two main reasons that your food isn’t getting crispy in the air fryer: 1) the temperature isn’t hot enough, and 2) the basket is over-crowded.

Both of these air fryer issues have an easy fix though!

Regarding temperature, make sure to set the air fryer temperature to what the recipe recommends. Additionally, allow the air fryer to heat up before adding the food. Preheating an air fryer takes about 3 minutes, and many air fryer models will notify you when they’re up to temperature so you know when to add the food.

And for the potential over-crowding problem, be careful not to over-fill the air fryer basket. Essentially, none of the items in the air fryer should be touching. This is so that the air can flow above and below, and properly crisp the food.

Can I Use Non-Stick Cooking Spray in the Air Fryer?

No, don’t use aerosol non-stick cooking spray cans (such as PAM) in the air fryer. These frequently contain propellant (to dispense the spray), which can cause the finish in air fryer baskets to chip.

Instead, you can brush the oil in the basket or use an oil mister.

How Do You Get Breadcrumbs to Stick to Green Beans?

This recipe uses three tricks to make sure the breadcrumbs stick to the green beans.

  1. After you wash your green beans, pat them dry with a clean kitchen towel.
  2. Then coat the green beans flour. The easiest way to do this is to add the beans and the flour to a Ziploc bag, seal it, and toss it around.
  3. Next dip the floured green beans in lightly beaten egg.

After that, the breadcrumbs will stick well!
